Currently she’s enjoying working with the Albert Park Singers and Abingdon Gospel Choir.
Alongside teaching for many years, Michiyo has worked as a repetiteur to Abingdon-Witney College singing group, Oxford Touring Opera, Abingdon Operatic Society, and Opera Anywhere, in the UK. Throughout her career, Michiyo has collaborated with many instrumentalists and singers here and abroad. Some of her solo and chamber performances have been aired on Japanese and German radio (NHK and ZDF respectively). This led to a spell in the cult pop band Fat & Frantic, who made the top 100 twice with a whimsical anthem Last night my. Her debut recital in Japan was awarded the Art Festival Prize and received many favourable reviews in the press. Michiyo has appeared both as a soloist and as part of a chamber group in many concerts in the UK, Germany, and Japan, including a performance of Mozart’s piano concerto in Germany. She continued her piano studies at Staatliche Musikhochschule in Stuttgart, Germany where she attained an MA with the highest mark. Born Eunice Kathleen Waymon in small-town North Carolina, Nina Simone changed the face of both music and race relations in America. Michiyo Machida studied at the Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music where she completed her BA in Music. The inimitable, gorgeously talented Nina Simone (1933-2003)-the 'high priestess of soul'-sets the story of her tumultuous, passionate life straight in I Put a Spell on You. Her primary aim, she says, is for everyone, of whatever musical experience, or none, to enjoy the pleasure of singing, but alongside that, also to experience the satisfaction of working together to improve as a choir and of reaching a standard of which everyone can be proud.
Michael’s Church, whose popular Christmas Eve carol service is a regular highlight of Abingdon’s Christmas calendar. She also enjoyed a short spell with Wantage Male Voice Choir and is currently in charge of the music at St.
